Description

Sustainable aquaculture production can only occur when fish are healthy and free from disease. Fish disease management is a combination of preventing the onset of disease and measures to reduce losses from disease when it occurs. Behind the rapid aquaculture expansion is growing seafood demand driven by population growth, rising incomes and changing consumer preferences, and the continued trend of seafood demand growth represents investment opportunities. The Global Aquaculture Alliance, among others, has estimated US$100 billion of investment opportunities. However, constraining private investment is the risk of diseases, which represents one of the major risks to aquaculture operations. Fish diseases have cost the global aquaculture industry tens of billions of dollars over the last 20 years.

This volume is packed with aquaculture management and regulations, risks for catastrophic disease outbreak, creating a more secure environment for much-needed new investment in farmed seafood production, to modernize and improve aquaculture for food security and by tackling the problem of fish disease. We also aim to elucidate the physiological and immunological features of aquatic animals in response to pathogens, which will directly enable us to better understand the diseases and therefore develop targeted drugs/ control measures against it. Studies have identified key causative factors behind disease outbreaks in farmed fish and shellfish and elucidated the ways and means for successful recovery from disease outbreaks. The book explores a variety of bacterial, viral and parasitic pathogens, their trends, rising problems, and the comparative significance to aquaculture. Developments in diagnostics and disease management, as well as the widespread use of serological and molecular methods, are explored.

Diagnosis and Control of Diseases of Fish and Shellfish will be of immense interest for students, researchers, diagnosticians, veterinarians, fish pathologists and microbiologists dealing with the management of diseases of fish and shellfish.
